Rami Benbenishty / Identity-based victimization

Identity-based victimization

How who a student is, in culture, gender and background, relates to who is targeted at school.

Research interests and projects

Arab and Jewish students

Studies of Arab and Jewish students in Israeli schools look at fear, victimization and how schools differ. A recent analysis followed victimization and climate in Arab and Jewish elementary schools across twelve years of population-wide data.

Gender and sexual harassment

Work in Israel and Chile examines sexual harassment by peers and by adults at school, and how gender shapes who is targeted and who is believed.

Discrimination and vulnerable groups

Studies of discriminatory bullying look at students who are homeless, and at children from military families, who often face discrimination that standard surveys miss.

Harm by school staff

Children's reports of emotional, physical and sexual maltreatment by educational staff in Israel opened a line of work on how adults in schools can be a source of harm as well as protection.
